‘INDIA, TRANSMISSION, RECEIVING UNIT 23’

THREE PIECES, FIVE MOVEMENTS:
THE
FIRST PIECE (INDIA) IS ANOTHER THREE-MOVEMENT EFFORT.
IT IS TONAL, RHYTHMIC, AND FOLLOWS THE FAST-SLOW-FAST STRUCTURE I SEEM TO LOVE SO MUCH. FOR
SOLO CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA, IT PLAYS MUCH LIKE A ROCKIN’ CLARINET CONCERTO. VERY COMMERCIAL
SOUNDING, IN FACT, I KNOW SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY LIKES IT! OF COURSE, THAT PERSON IS A BIT STRANGE.
THE SECOND AND THIRD PIECES
(TRACKS 4 AND 5) WERE IN FACT THE THESIS FOR MY MASTERS DEGREE IN MUSIC COMPOSITION
BACK IN 2001. THOUGH I HAVE GIVEN THEM SEPARATE TITLES, THE TWO MOVEMENTS ARE INTENDED TO
BE JOINED TOGETHER AS THEY ARE HERE. REALLY, THEY COMPRISE A SINGLE WORK IN TWO MOVEMENTS.
THESE ARE THE KIND OF EXPLANATIONS THAT BECOME NECESSARY WHEN YOU INSIST ON TITLING YOUR MOVEMENTS.
IN ANY CASE, I RETURN HERE TO MYSTICAL THEMES AS INSPIRATION, SPECIFICALLY, MEDITATION AND
CONVERSATION WITH THE DIVINE, LITERALLY ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
THE MOVEMENTS ARE SCORED FOR ORCHESTRA WITH CHOIR, TWO HARPS AND GAMELAN ENSEMBLE...HOO –
