‘HOLY MOUNTAIN’ 1998

THREE MOVEMENTS FOR SOPRANO CHORUS AND ORCHESTRA.
INSPIRED BY TRUE LIFE EVENTS. THE MOVEMENTS FOLLOW THE TRADITIONAL FAST-SLOW-FAST BLUEPRINT
FOUND IN MOST 3-MOVEMENT WORKS. HOWEVER, FOR THIS PIECE I CHOSE TO FURTHER CONTRAST THE MOVEMENTS
BY WRITING IN DIFFERENT ERAS. THE FIRST MOVEMENT
IS NOT UNLIKE A MODERN FILM SCORE CUE; DYNAMIC, SIMPLE
AND CRASH-BANG. THE SECOND MOVEMENT
IS SLOW, VERY MOODY, SLIGHTLY DISSONANT, AND REMINISCENT
OF 20TH CENTURY COMPOSITIONAL TECHNIQUES. THE
THIRD AND FINAL MOVEMENT IS
IN A BAROQUE STYLE, HIGHLY CONTRAPUNTAL, MAKING USE OF FUGAL ELEMENTS AND INCORPORATING A
PIPE ORGAN. VOCALS ARE BY TERRESA WRIGHT AND WINTER WATSON (NOW SINGING WITH THE L.A. MASTER
CHORALE).
THIS IS ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES. THE WHOLE THING LASTS A TOTAL OF ONLY 14:10 SHORT, BUT
EMOTIONALLY CHARGED AND FULL OF LIFE. |
